Negotiating contracts is at the core of any labor union, and Equity must approach this task energetically and aggressively to achieve what we deserve: fair wages, safe working environments, and to be treated at all times with respect. Our CBAs are places where we can fight for our values and achieve gains not only in salaries, but also in anti-harassment and anti-discrimination policies that will make our workplaces safer and fairer.
Equity will soon negotiate a new Unified Touring Agreement for all contracts on the road. My specific experience touring the same (complicated and dangerous) show (first on a Production Contract and then immediately following on a SETA contract) gave me a deep working knowledge of and unique perspective on the various strengths and weaknesses of both of our current rulebooks in today's marketplace.
Equity is also set to renegotiate LORT during this time. My experience working in various shows from LORT A+ (Broadway) to LORT D will allow me to push for legislation I believe will add value to our membership.
Once we achieve contract agreements with our employers, we must stop allowing them to go back on their word by granting concession after concession. We must stand our ground for what our members deserve, and stop giving in after the fact.
What we can achieve at the negotiating table is directly affected by our ability to engage and activate our membership to put pressure on our employers--it is our collective voice that wields the power to achieve our goals.
